Transfer Carriage

Transfer is a type of travel when you fly from point A to point B with an intermediate stop-over (transfer) with the duration of no more than 24 hours.

Stop-over point is called transfer point, and stop-over is an interlining. It is essential, that the flight from an interline point follows with a different flight number. It can be the flight of the airline company which operated the flight to the transfer point, or any other company’s flight.

In fact the differences between transfer and stop-over to change the flight are as follows:

  • No need for baggage claim
  • No need to proceed with departure formalities*
  • Save time

*Upon condition, that a passenger checks in both for a flight to the transfer destination and a connected flight from transfer point to the airport of destination (two boarding passes are given).
In this case transfer passengers do not need to check in at desks or in transfer areas. They should go straight to the gates of departure lounges for international/domestic airlines. The gate number is shown on the boarding pass or at information desk. More detailed information on a through-check-in is available at the check-in desk in the departure airport.
Not all airports offer transfer passengers check-in. Please, find out at the departure airport if your baggage is registered through the final destination point.

Advantages of transfer

  • Additional options to choose dates and time of departure
    If there are no direct flights scheduled or it does not fit you, you can always choose the best possible transfer route via a transfer point on the most convenient for you days of the week and time
  • Cheaper flights.
    When selling transfer flights on a special through tariffs with a stop in a transfer point the total flight cost may be lower than the cost of a direct stopples flight.
    Air tickets are available for sale in any air booking office in Russia or CIS.

ATTENTION: The following information is useful for transfer passengers

Please note that you will be required Russian Federation transit visa to pass custom control procedures in Zhukovsky (ZIA) transfer airport.
In case of visa absence you can be refused to check-in.

Responsibilities of a carrier in case of transfer:

  • When booking a carrier must provide transfer and receive confirmation for all legs of the flight (even for other carrier’s legs). This will allow a passenger to arrive for check-in on time.
  • A carrier must inform a transfer passenger about departure formalities and requirements at the transfer airport. Moreover, a carrier must provide passengers with the following information:
    • Route, time of arrival to the transfer airport for proceeding with departure formalities.
    • Procedures, which should be executed in a transit or transfer points for further transportation to the destination point.
      Travelling with transfer an international flight passenger with a stop on the territory of the Russian Federation and following further with a domestic flight is obliged to claim a baggage (regardless of whether it was registered to the final destination or transfer point), pass through customs control, check in for a connected flight and register his baggage, right after passing the passport control in a transfer airport (p. 6 of FAR №82 of 28.06.2007; article 354 of the Customs Code of the Customs Union )
    • Local requirements of the country where transfer takes place
  • A carrier must provide a minimal allowed connection time with the flight where a passengers has his seat booked.

For referential use Minimal connection time (MCT) – is a time period required for a successful transfer and baggage reloading from one flight to another in a transfer airport (from 60 minutes to 24 hours). Connection of more than 24 hours between the flights is considered to be a stop over. Airport can not guarantee a convenient transfer if MCT is not followed.

  • In transfer points passengers are offered service upon providing a confirmed booking for the next leg, if the miss of a connected flight occurred by airline company’s fault. If connection time is more than 24 hours a passenger and his baggage if check in to the transfer point only.

  • In case of flight delay and connection flight miss a carrier must find a new route for a passenger and amend all necessary changes in the initial booking, reconfirm transportation.

Baggage registration for transfer passengers

Transfer passenger baggage must be registered and tagged through to the final destination point, upon the condition that technical capabilities for that are available in the airport and there are no contradictions with the legislation in an interline country, and if a passenger does now wish to claim the baggage in a transfer point.

A passenger should be informed about destination point for his baggage. Baggage of visa-free transfer passengers is always registered trough to the final destination point of transportation. No access to the baggage is available for transit, transfer passengers..

In case there are changes in a route initiated by transfer, transit passengers their baggage is additionally inspected and loaded to the same flight as passengers.

Transfer transportation of any kind of weapon and ammunition is forbidden!

For referential use.. If transfer is arranged through the Customs union, passengers should inform a carrier in a written form before he baggage registration about any items which are subject to customs declaration.

* There is a number of Russian airports where transfer is available only for domestic directions. International transfer is not possible because of special transfer lounge unavailability. This restriction is referred to the following airports:

ATTENTION passengers flying to the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan) with a transfer in Russian airports!

Please note, that there is a new baggage claim procedure in International Koltsovo airport

Under this new procedure, upon arrival, you should do the following:

  • Get Through Passport Control in the Terminal B.
  • Leave the Terminal B following the airport signs, and proceed to the Terminal A to the baggage claim area.

If Koltsovo airport is not your final destination and you have a further flight, you should claim your baggage in the terminal A and proceed to check-in counters again.

In case of connecting flight, please watch the time, and do not miss your flight!

According to the Customs Code EAEU requirements, a passenger cross customs border at the first EAEU airport.

It means that passengers should cross the border of Russian Federation to declare items for personal use, including carry-on baggage on their own.

Before to buy an air ticket with connection via Russian airport to another EAEU country, we recommend to check international passport validity dates, visa to transfer country (Russia) and destination country (Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan) , and/or other documents required for crossing the borders of states.**

** This point does not refer to passengers with a transfer in Moscow (Domodedovo airport).

Minimal document package to fly via Russian Airport to EAEU to another countries of EAEU:

  • Valid international passport
  • Valid visa or any other document which allows to stay on the territory of the tranfer and destination country
